If you give something to someone or make a surprise or a nice gesture or you help and you know that their happiness will make you happy and the fact that they will appreciate it makes you feel good about who you are as a person but also because you were capable to bring a smile or a piece of hope in someone’s life can it be called altruism?
If not, what would you call it?
Depends on personal interpretation. To me, if both parts are aware of who is giving the help, then no. But if it’s done without asking for recognition than it I would say yes. In that case I would call it philanthropy.

Yes, both parts will know but the part who is giving the help or making the gesture, does it more like a surprise. Let’s say that you know that your friend is going through hard times and in one random day you show up giving an unexpected gift .The main reason you are offering the gift is to make your friend happy but at the same time you will be happy that you made her happy. 🙂 Thank you very much for taking time to read and answer my question. 🙂 XX

Did the person doing the kindness do it just to get the “happy feelings”??? There are often more benefits from doing something nice than the deed that is actually being done. Wow… this is deep. I would call it “altruism”, yes.
When I teach a class, I know going in that I will gain more from teaching than the students. It’s just a positive by-product.
Now I am going to put my brain back on the shelf…

;)) No, he/she is doing it to bring happiness to someone but he/she is aware of the benefits of doing that deed. Thank you very much for the answer. Hope your brain will have some good rest. ;))
